EuropeÕs population experienced a drop in this period.  About 20% lived in cities.  They were mostly manual labor.  Crime increased and the poor could not afford to live.  The nuclear family  continued in the west while in the east the extended family was the rule. Aristocratic women married young, common women married later. Generally, upper class women had  8-9, lower class 6-7 live births.  Childhood did not exist—children worked.  No mandatory schooling. Leisure was usually communal---carnivals, charivari.
